Rosas e ouro para a Sandi - Roses and gold for Sandi

This week, one of the tea related events I've been taking part in for almost two years, Tea Time Tuesday, celebrates its third birthday. As its hostess, dear Sandi of Rose Chintz Cottage, invited us to take part in the birthday party, the theme of which is roses, naturally, I chose a Spode rose teapot, almost bicentenary, to join the party. I'm also linking  with Terri and Martha of Tea Cup Tuesday and Ruth of Tuesday Cuppa Tea.

The tea cup would also have to be special, in spite of having no roses. There is no mark, not even a pattern number, but the shape is the so called bute shape, one of the first tea cup shapes used in England. It must be the same age as the teapot, or perhaps a little older, made in the first decades of the 19th century, decorated in neoclassical style.

Both items have faults, specially the teapot - with visible restoration in several spots - but had it not been so, I wouldn't have found it on the ground of an antique fair in Porto - the city of Port wine!!! - being sold for a bargain, thus being accessible to my pocket, which never gets tired of buying such precious things.

A marca do bule, identificando o tipo de pasta, porcelana feldspática,  data-o de cerca de 1820.
The mark on the teapot, by identifying the type of paste, feldspar porcelain, dates it to about 1820.

As to the cup and saucer, I've seen porcelains with the same pattern, all in gold with acanthus leaves, attributed to early Coalport - Coalport Porcelain Works - only the border is different, a Greek border all in rectilinear lines (see here
I had failed to mention, but Felicity reminded me of it in her comment, that a little time ago a saucer with a very similar pattern was shown in the blog Reggie Darling.

E agora só me resta desejar:
Happy anniversary dear Sandi!

    1. Well, Snap, these finds make my day when they happen.
I think I have an eye for antique china and I usually buy it cheap, in the so called flea markets. ;)
      Have a nice Tea Day!

  2. Hi Maria,
Thanks for joining my blog, now it does not look so lonely he he.

Oh your tea cup and saucer. I thought I had seen this pattern in another blog by Reggie Darling.

    http://reggiedarling.blogspot.hk/2013/01/saucer-of-new-year.html

Not sure if they are in the same pattern but it does look very similar.

Well, as long as the piece has history and you like it, it does not matter whether it's perfect or not.

    1. You know, Felicity, already last week I wanted to join your blog, but you hadn't introduced that application yet. So, I'm glad I was your first follower today and also that you're my newest one :)
I see you also know that blog Reggie Darling. Thanks for mentioning it here, because as I had prepared this post in a hurry, being already late, I had forgotten about it and it was something interesting to add here.

  7. Hello Maria, The tea pot is a pretty one, and the tea cup is also very lovely. I have always gold pattern trim on china. And both of these have plenty! It is such an investigation with these older pieces, it helps to know history too. Great research to figure out the cup is an early Coalport. Wow!
    I enjoyed your post : )

    1. Dear Martha and Terri,
I can't forget that you were the first to inspire me to participate in these tea events. Thanks for hosting Tea Cup Tuesday.
As to the cup, Terri, unmarked as it is, I'm not sure it is an early Coalport, it could be by another maker using the same motif, but it's certainly English and of the Neoclassical period.
Hugs to both of you, dear ftriends

That’s what all of us do in theses blogs, share beauty and treasures... like poetry!

A chávena achei-a particularmente requintada.

    1. Hi Zaa,
It's always a pleasure to read your nice comments showing interest in the same things I treasure.
Spode was/is a major maker and offers the advantage of having marked its china almost from the beginning of manufacture.
The teapot was quite a find, I agree, which made me very happy!:)
Big hugs for you too, dear friend.
